“Colorado is a pawn for the Obama-Biden plan. These bills are a model for what they’ll try to push in Congress.” – Denver University law professor Dave Kopel

As Colorado goes, so goes the nation? Let’s hope not. As it stands now under Colorado law, the only individual with the authority to arrest a sheriff is the coroner. However, there is a bill on the way to Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper that would give the Secret Service vast new powers, including the ability to arrest sheriffs or other law enforcement agents who stand up for the Second Amendment and refuse to enforce Obama’s unconstitutional gun restrictions.

“This is absolutely insane,” Rep. Lori Saine said. “In theory if a Secret Service agent is in a county where the sheriff has refused to enforce some of the recent unenforceable gun laws, the agent could arrest an individual if he believes the law has been broken.”

Colorado’s bill, SB-13-013, passed on essentially a party-line vote in the Democrat-controlled House. It gives Secret Service agents arrest powers by naming them a peace officer, putting them on the level with state law enforcement officials.

And during debate, no one could explain why this sort of bill was needed. All kinds of hemming and hawing occurred on the part of the Democrats.

“When I asked in committee why they need this I was told it was so we can exercise 72-hour mental holds on our own citizens,” Sen. Kevin Lundberg said. “I found it curious…Currently a police officer, doctor, psychiatrists, registered nurses and other professionals just on the strength of their word can say they want a person taken against their will and put in a mental institution for up to three business days.”

Or…wait. Was it necessary in case something happened during a motorcade procession and the Secret Service needed to make an arrest? That’s what Rep. Jared Wright was told.

Rep. Saine was told it would help local law enforcement with check and wire fraud, even though neither issue is mentioned in the bill.

The real reason, it seems, is to set up a framework so the federal government will hold broad, unchecked powers over the states—and President Obama and Vice President Biden were solidly behind the legislation.

Law enforcement officers across the country are fighting back against the Obama administration’s assault on our Second Amendment. The Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association is compiling a list of sheriffs, associations and police chiefs who have vowed to uphold the Second Amendment in the face of any unconstitutional action by President Obama. In January, 28 of Utah’s 29 sheriffs signed a letter to Obama stating,

"We respect the office of the President of the United States. But make no mistake, as the duly elected sheriffs of our respective counties; we will enforce the rights guaranteed to our citizens by the Constitution. No federal officials will be permitted to descend upon our constituents and take from them what the Bill of Rights — in particular Amendment II — has given them. We, like you, swore a solemn oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, and we are prepared to trade our lives for the preservation of its traditional interpretation."

At the time, the mainstream media dismissed the letter as hype and ridiculed the thought as right-wing paranoia. But now, Colorado has sent just such a proposal to their Governor. Is this the beginning of a nationwide problem?

As states such as Montana, Kentucky, Ohio, Louisiana, Idaho and others begin to put measures in place to protect their constitutional rights, Obama and his administration are working furiously to tear down our freedoms. Congress needs to be on alert that we will not sacrifice our rights, and each Member needs to protect his or her state against Obama’s federal bullies.

Our Second Amendment rights are under assault from every angle. Stop Obama from creating a modern-day Gestapo and demand our leaders defend and uphold the U.S. Constitution.
