Breaking: The GOP leadership just blocked President Trump from declaring an immigration emergency, and now a new and even larger migrant caravan is leaving Honduras for the United States!
President Trump was all set to do it. The paperwork was already drafted and the White House Counsel's Office said Trump was on firm legal ground to do it.
If Donald Trump could declare a national emergency over illegal immigration at the southern border, he would be able to use discretionary funds to start the border wall construction project.
Many in the GOP understand that this is the only way. After a meeting at the White House yesterday, Lindsey Graham announced that he supported Trump's plan to use his lawful and constitutional powers.
"Speaker Pelosi's refusal to negotiate on funding for a border wall/barrier -- even if the government were to be reopened -- virtually ends the congressional path to funding for a border wall. It is time for President Trump to use emergency powers to fund the construction of a border wall/barrier," Graham declared in a statement.
President Trump was all ready to pull the trigger, and then the GOP leadership ordered him to stand down. McConnell and McCarthy both warned Trump that there would be hell-to-pay if he went through with it. Powerful Senators like Chuck Grassley warned that there would be investigations and even votes to overturn the declaration if Trump signed the declaration.
And just like that, the emergency declaration was delayed. Who needs Democrats when Republicans are so eager to keep the border wide open?!
We don't have time for this obstruction in Congress. An emergency declaration wouldn't only allow border wall construction to start, but it would give President Trump access to more than 22 billion to shore up the Southern Border. That includes hiring more Border Patrol agents and upgrading their technology and equipment.
President Trump announced this week that another migrant caravan -- bigger than the last one -- was forming in Honduras and would start traveling to the United States any day now. The media was quick to try to prove that the President was lying.
Well, it turns out that President Trump is absolutely right. The next migrant caravan will leave Honduras in just three days. Mexico has already announced that they will be allowed in to travel to the US border.
This is an emergency, and the law allows President Trump to treat it as such. But Republicans and Democrats don't care. They would rather keep the border wide open than allow the President to use his lawful powers to shut this illegal migration down!
Democrats are refusing to even consider funding for a border wall or fence. As Lindsey Graham said, an emergency declaration is now the only way to get the funding.
The GOP understands this. They know that without the declaration, the border wall will never get built. They spent the last two years blocking border wall funding. They know that if they can block it one more time, they'll never have to worry about it again.
This isn't just a fight for you and me. It's not even a fight for our children or grand-children. This is a fight to secure the border to protect untold numbers of Americans who haven't even been born yet.
This is our last, best chance to secure the border and protect future generations from the scourge of illegal immigration!
President Trump is doing everything he can, but it is up to YOU to put the pressure on Congress!
